Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask most.

If you don't see your question here, call us. A real care coordinator picks up.

What is non-skilled home care, and how is it different from home health?

Non-skilled home care covers help with daily living: bathing, dressing, meals, companionship, mobility support, and light housekeeping. It does not include nursing tasks, wound care, or therapy.

Home health is medical care delivered at home by licensed clinicians (RNs, PTs, OTs, speech therapists), typically short term and ordered by a physician.

Blue Lake provides non-skilled home care, and we coordinate with home health agencies when both services are involved in your loved one's care plan.

What services do you provide?

Blue Lake offers a full range of non-skilled home care services:

  • Companion Care
  • Personal Care (bathing, dressing, mobility, toileting)
  • Meal Preparation & Light Housekeeping
  • Medication Reminders
  • Transportation & Errands
  • Respite Care
  • 24/7 & Live-In Care
  • Alzheimer's & Dementia Support
  • Post-Hospital / Post-Surgery Recovery

See our Services page for full descriptions of each.

Do you accept Medicaid?

Yes. Blue Lake accepts Michigan Medicaid through several programs and we help families navigate the eligibility and enrollment process. We also accept private pay, long-term care insurance, and VA Aid and Attendance benefits.

What Michigan Medicaid programs work with Blue Lake?

Blue Lake works with these Michigan Medicaid programs:

  • MI Choice Waiver - long-term care services for adults who qualify for nursing home level of care but want to stay home.
  • Home Help Program - assistance with personal care for Michigan Medicaid beneficiaries.
  • MI Health Link - integrated Medicare and Medicaid program for dually eligible adults in select counties.
  • Community Living Supports - support services delivered through Community Mental Health agencies.

Eligibility and benefits vary by program and county. Call us and we will help you understand which program may apply to your situation.

How much does private-pay home care cost in Michigan?

Costs vary based on the hours, the level of care needed, and your location in Michigan. Most families budget hourly for shorter shifts, by the day for live-in care, and a flat rate for 24/7 rotating shift coverage.

Rather than quote a generic number, we provide a clear written quote during the free in-home assessment, based on your specific situation. There is no long-term contract.

How do I get started?

Three steps:

  • Call or submit the form. Reach us at (555) 123-4567 or use the contact page.
  • Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits, listens, and builds a plan. No cost, no obligation.
  • Care begins. We match a caregiver to your loved one and start, often within the same week.
How are caregivers vetted?

Every Blue Lake caregiver goes through:

  • State and federal background checks
  • Pre-employment drug screening
  • Motor vehicle records review
  • Reference verification
  • License or certification verification, where applicable
  • Onboarding training plus ongoing education on safety, dementia care, body mechanics, and infection control
Can I choose my caregiver?

Yes. We match caregivers to your loved one based on care needs, schedule, and personality. You meet the caregiver before care begins and you have a say in the match.

What if my caregiver isn't a good fit?

Just call us. We will arrange a different caregiver, often within a day or two. A good fit matters as much as a good plan, and we never charge a fee to switch caregivers.

Are caregivers insured and bonded?

Yes. Blue Lake carries general liability and professional liability insurance, workers' compensation for our caregivers, and bonding. We are happy to share proof of coverage on request.

Do you offer 24/7 care?

Yes. Blue Lake offers two forms of round-the-clock care:

  • Rotating shift coverage - typically two or three caregivers cycling through 8 or 12 hour shifts, alert at all times.
  • Live-in care - one caregiver living in the home with built-in rest periods.

24/7 care is common in dementia care, post-hospital recovery, and end-of-life support.

What areas do you serve?

Blue Lake serves families across Michigan, with concentrated coverage in Southeast Michigan, Mid-Michigan, and West Michigan. See our Service Area page for the full county and city list. Don't see your city? Call us. We likely cover you.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Most private-pay shifts carry a small minimum (typically 3 to 4 hours) so we can deliver meaningful, unhurried care. Medicaid-funded hours follow the rules of your specific program. We will walk through the details during your assessment.
